In this paper we describe the methodology that was followed in order to create an AR application that will provide users with a virtual time leap experience in the past depicting the monument’s history in its social context. A great challenge for AR is to shed a new light on monuments, especially in cities like Athens, filled with historical monuments. Augmented reality (AR) is the most characteristic example as it surpasses the limits that exist in other media offering a unique experience to the user. Current technology offers the capability to alter the way that information is provided and represented. As the spark to discover that treasure has ignited and travelling around the world has become much easier, it is necessary to enhance the way that monuments are exhibited and communicated. The construction of 3D models and the possibilities of their further use to build smart tourism services based on Web/AR/MR/VR technology was also presented.Ī nation’s cultural heritage is of great importance both for indigenous people as well as for foreigners as it is a nation’s contribution to humanity and global civilization. It describes the most important aspects related to the process of planning UAV measurement missions and photogrammetric data acquisition. The paper presents an universal methodology for the inventory of historical buildings using low-cost UAVs. Despite the increasing use of new measuring platforms and computer modeling techniques, the implementation of 3D building models in smart tourism services is still limited, focusing more on the results of scientific projects rather than on the implementation of the new ones. It also creates an opportunity to preserve the architectural heritage and preventive maintenance of buildings. 3D modeling provides a new opportunity to use AR/MR technology to present information about objects, virtual tours of the historic buildings, and their promotion. 3D models are an important element of this process as they form the basis for the use of new visualization technologies, such as Virtual, Mixed, and Augmented Reality (VR/MR/AR). Information technologies offer new opportunities for the development of the services market, including the development of smart tourism services, as an integral part of the smart city concept. These are major barriers limiting the development of modern tourist platforms that promote local attractions. It requires the use of expensive equipment and often manual work as well as professional software. The acquisition of data for 3D object modeling is a complicated, time-consuming, and cost-intensive process. Even small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) can deliver valuable data for the inventory of inaccessible and dangerous areas or objects. Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) are widely used in low-cost photogrammetry. Finally, we discuss preliminary results to minimize the risk of accidents when using augmented reality applications in an outdoor urban environment. We also measured the total time that participants spent looking at the screen, as well as the perceived elapsed time as a measurement of real world dissociation. The results show that the effectiveness of these guidance systems depend on the distance to the point of interest and the accuracy of the data obtained from the Global Positioning System. We tested the helpfulness of a map with the points of interest, an image preview of the next point of interest to visit, and an arrow showing the direction to it. We show that different guidance systems can be supplementary to provide directions to a point of interest and offer clues that help the user find the augmented data when they get close to the location they have to visit. The success of augmented reality applications for pedestrians depends on different factors including a reliable guidance system and preventing risks. Handheld and wearable devices are becoming ubiquitous in our lives and augmented reality technology is stepping out of the laboratory environment and becoming ready to be used by anyone with portable devices.
